God.
The Creation of Adam (Creación_de_Adán) - Michlangelo c.1512 |
The Oxford English dictionary defines God as below
- The creator and ruler of the universe and source of all moral authority; the supreme being
- A superhuman being or spirit worshipped as having power over nature or human fortunes; a deity.
The conventional concepts of god as proposed by the world religions have not fascinated me beyond my early teenage years. God is more like a fictional character to me (Perhaps with a voice of Morgan Freeman). Of course some of you may argue that I can not prove the non-existence of god and I would agree with you. Along with that I would ask you prove your case for the existence of god and based on prior experience, I can say that you are going to fail miserably.
So yes. I am an atheist. I would categorise myself as a Level 6 atheist as Richard Dawkins has said. I do not have absolute certainty that a god doesn't exist, but for all practical purposes, I consider that there is no god and live my life according to that. If I said I know that a god doesn't exist, that would be me committing intellectual dishonesty; and that is something I don't want to do.
I know. I know. Some of you may be itching to interrogate me at this point regarding my philosophy about life. We'll take it up some other time; perhaps over a cup of coffee (or tea, or something else; whatever floats your boat)
Coming back to the topic at hand. Let's consider the first definition given above. I am going to remove the attributes ruler, moral authority and supreme being out of it and just focus on the creator part. I am going to define god as "The creator and/or organiser of some universe". Did you notice how I said "some" universe instead of "the" universe? If you did, very good. It's still fine if you didn't. I used the word "some" because I am not using the word "universe" in the way we typically use. We typically use the "universe" to denote all of space and time; perhaps you think it was created by god, perhaps by the big bang or something like that or perhaps it may have always existed. I am using the word "universe" in a way similar to "MARVEL Universe". (I hope that you guys are familiar with the MARVEL Universe - It is where you have Spiderman, Iron Man, Thor... etc. yeah Avengers)
Ok. so we have established some ground rules here. At least for this post (or probably series of posts) we are going to use a loose definition of "god" and "universe". So "god" is basically somebody that creates a "universe" - and its difficult to define what "universe" means. I could try saying that "it is a realm with some particular set of rules to how things work, or a predefined sequence of events that happens inside some "universe". Alas, I can't define it. I give up. I am going to say that J. K. Rowling is the god of the Harry Potter universe.
If you have read this far, wonderful. Hope I haven't lost you here. Based on what I have said so far, you would probably be thinking along the lines like - "Wait, then could you consider art and literature as universes in itself? Are artists and authors gods?" Well, yeah! Awesome! Now, let's let that sink in a bit, shall we?
